If you are planning to travel this winter season, you might be thinking, ‘I’ll just pack some hoodies, gloves, and a scarf and I’ll be all set.’ Well, there are some other warm packing, winter travel essentials you might want to put on your packing list!

Maybe you are going to see the Northern Lights in Iceland in the dead of winter (my life goal!), or you are visiting your relatives up in the northeast. Or, maybe you are just taking a trip to Alaska for the thrill of it!

Perhaps you are visiting family for the holidays and the weather looks to be barely hitting 30 degrees. If this is the case, you will definitely need some gear, and these budget travel tips for the holidays

Whatever the case, you will need to be kept warm! Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you to pack your warmest gloves and boots, because you already know all this.

You don’t need a list to tell you to pack a jacket.

What I will tell you, though, is some lesser-known, but super cool warm packing essentials you might have never thought of, but won’t be able to travel in the cold without ever again!

You can trust me on this list for one big reason: Not only do I hate the cold, but I have a condition that makes it dangerous for me to get too cold. So, I have definitely had practice in and experimented with different methods of staying warm!

These items will vary in the category from clothing, car equipment, to other products that are just plain awesome!

Even if you are not planning on any winter travel this year, these items will definitely make even the slightest of chilly days that much cozier!

winter essentials

One of my favorite warm packing essentials for winter travel is this rechargeable hand warmer. I have had this one for about a year, and it has saved me during the chilliest of days here in Colorado.

This hand warmer prevents you from having to continually buy those one time use, throwaway hand warmers. With this one, all you have to do is keep it charged and it will work for much, much longer!

It also has 3 settings that you can rotate through with a click of a button. Each setting gets hotter and hotter, depending on your needs. The entire thing heats up so your entire hand can stay warm!

Additionally, it also doubles as a charger. You can plug your phone into it with a USB and keep your phone charged! Talk about a true emergency item!

The hand warmer does take a little bit to get hot. Though, it does warm up pretty quickly. If you are looking for something that is really hot, you will need to keep it on for about 20 minutes or so.

If you are someone that always has cold hands, you definitely need this!

If you don’t like the idea of having to carry around a hand warmer, you might want to add these to your warm packing essentials list: Heated gloves!

Instead of switching the hand warmer from one pocket to another, why not just have your entire glove be heated? All you need to do is press a button, and you have 3 settings of warmth to choose from!

They come with battery blocks and a charger, so all you need to do is make sure they are charged and you are good to go!

Plus, they have touchscreen fingertips so you don’t need to take them off for really any reason while you are out in the cold. Additionally, they are water-resistant so you won’t feel the snow melting and getting your gloves all wet when you go to throw a snowball at your friend.

The heated part only covers the back of your hand, but they keep your entire hand warm and toasty anyway!

We’ve talked about warm packing essentials to keep your hands and fingers warm, but what about your feet? I’m sure you’ve guessed this by now: heated socks!

When your hands are cold, you can put them in your pocket or blow hot air on them, or run them under warm water. However, when your feet are cold, there is not a whole lot more you can do!

That’s why heated socks are the perfect trick to never have cold feet again!

Just like the other electric warmers, these socks have 3 settings depending on how warm you want them. They are also charged by a battery and will last up to 19 hours!

Made with 4 layers, your feet are sure to stay warm in these comfortable socks! Pair them with some good boots, and you will be good to go! No more numb toes again!

If you’re someone who is always cold, you know the value of a nice heated blanket! However, most of the time you need an outlet to plug them into, which doesn’t work for all locations you might want one, like the car or office.

Cue the USB Heated blanket. You no longer need an outlet or a cigarette lighter socket in your car. All you need is a USB port- which most cars have nowadays.

Think about taking that long car ride up to the chilly mountains. You might want a nice warm blanket to lay over your lap while you are driving or as a passenger. You will definitely want to add this to your road trip essentials packing list!

Maybe you are at the office, and your boss refuses to turn the heat past 66. Simple plug-in your blanket (even to your computer!) and you will no longer have to spend your days shivering again!

Additionally, maybe you are on a boat for a winter cruise and it starts to get chilly. You can take your chargeable hand warmer, and plug in your heated blanket to it. I know, right?! Ultimate warmness going on right there.

If you are planning to go hiking, ice fishing, climbing, or anything really in the snow that requires you to have a safe grip, consider getting some ice cleats, or boot chains

Picture this: you finally got to Colorado this winter and are ready to hike your first mountain. (Let’s assume you already adjusted to the altitude!) You take your first few steps and are already slipping and losing your grip.

“But, I bought hiking shoes!” You might be thinking. Well, those alone don’t always cut it. Take it from a local who’s been there, done that.

Do yourself a favor and prevent tons of bruises and get some chains. Just like how you need chains on your tires to drive up icy roads in the mountains, sometimes your shoes need a little extra help too!

Plus, they are affordable so even if you don’t end up needing them, you will be better safe than sorry! You don’t want your shoe choices to prevent you from hiking that glorious mountain that you flew across the country to see!

Bike Handlebar Mitts

Let’s say during your travels you have planned to take a leisurely bike ride, ride a race, or take a bike tour. But uh oh, the weather is looking super cold that morning. Gloves are great and all, but, they might not cut it with the winds.

Cue these bike handlebar mitts! They might look silly or seem like a weird concept, but your hands and fingers will surely thank you for your consideration!

With gloves and these mitts, your hands are sure to keep warm, even with the coldest of winds blowing over them. They are even windproof and rainproof, so your hands will be covered no matter the weather!

These mitts slide easily over any bike handles, making it an easy solution to any cold blustery day. No one can stop you from taking that well-deserved bike ride!

Yea. You heard me right: a heated steering wheel cover!

How many times have you got into your car only to realize you forgot your gloves, so you painfully try to drive with just two fingers holding onto the ice-cold steering wheel.

What happens when you need to take your gloves off to eat something during your road trip? No one wants a cold steering wheel!

No one wants that! You need your hands on the steering wheel, okay? Either remember your gloves (which sometimes you can still feel the ice-cold wheel) or get yourself this fancy heated cover.

It is black and blends in nicely so it doesn’t look like you have anything weird on your steering wheel, and simply plugs into your car to heat up.

Don’t make your driving any more dangerous than it needs to be- make sure your hands are comfy on the wheel!

Pair this with the car electric blanket and you will be warm as warm can be!

Heated Car Cushion

I’m sure you saw this one coming: a heated car cushion! What better way to keep your entire body warm in the car than to have a soft, comfy pad to sit on?

Just like the other products, this one has different heating settings and plugs into your car.

Imagine having a heated cushion, a heated blanket, and a heated steering wheel. Your car would be decked out and ready for the craziest blizzard you’ve ever seen (well, maybe just a few flakes would be enough!)

Everyone will be fighting over the best seat in the car, and you can make everyone jealous of your warm booty!

Heated Ski Mask

Another item you’ve got to add to your warm packing essentials list is a heated ski mask. Not just any old ski mask- but a heated one, of course!

I’m sure you already have a hat and scarf or even a regular ski mask. But this takes things to the next level of warmness!

The heat will last up to 8 hours and gets up to 131 degrees, so you will never have a cold head again! This is super important because most of your body heat escapes through your head. So, if you have a warm head, your body will be warmer too!

Plus, it has a face-covering which doubles as a face mask which we have to wear practically everywhere nowadays. Now you’ve got two in one!

Another one of my favorite warm packing, winter travel essentials is a heated hat! I know, shocker! If you aren’t into having a full-blown heated ski mask, a heated hat might do the trick for you!

It has 3 different heating options, reaching its highest temperature after only 15 minutes! If you don’t need an extreme temperature, it can heat up to the lowest setting in just 5 minutes! A quick and easy way to warm up!

This can even double as heated ear muffs if you pull it down over your ears, warming up practically your entire head! Plus, it is wind-resistant, yet breathable so your head won’t start to sweat immediately.

As I previously said, most of your body heat escapes through your head, so it is super important to keep it warm! Just imagine having a nice warm hat on your head in the middle of a snowy day- seems nice, right!?

The last item I have to recommend to you on this warm packing list is this heated fleece scarf

Like many of the other items on this list, this scarf has 3 heating options and is rechargeable. It heats up to 145 degrees F, and lasts over 7 hours!

When you are wearing it and you’re ready to turn on the heat, all you need to do is hit the button! So, you can wear it as a regular fleece scarf, or turn it on during especially chilly days depending on how warm you want it!
